Overview

BC Transit, in partnership with the Town of Sidney, is planning a new Transit Hub that will improve transit service in Sidney and across the Saanich Peninsula. With growing demand for transit, we need a better space to keep things running efficiently and on time. Once the design has been finalized and funding is secured, the Transit Hub will make buses easier to access, help us offer more frequent service, and create a more comfortable ridership experience so that everyone can get where they need to go faster. The illustration below shows the initial concept for the Transit Hub at the intersection of Seventh Street and Bevan Avenue. About 1,500 hundred people are expected to use the Transit Hub each day.

What is a Transit Hub?

The Transit Hub will allow multiple bus routes to stop close together, making it easier for people to transfer between bus routes and will be Sidney’s Station for the future Peninsula RapidBus Line. It will feature:

  • Five bus stops
  • New bus shelters and benches
  • Bike parking
  • New landscaping
  • New lighting
  • Improved sidewalks
  • Safety improvements

We’re still fine-tuning the design. The things we’re currently looking into are:

  • Adjusting the location of the bus stops on Bevan Ave to minimize changes to on-street parking
  • Providing a washroom
  • Providing secure bike parking
  • Having a Modo Carshare vehicle parked at the Transit Hub
  • Improving pedestrian safety in the laneway between the Transit Hub and the shopping centre

Why build a new Transit Hub in Sidney?

  • Space to increase service: The new hub will allow BC Transit to increase service on the Saanich Peninsula and serve more passengers.
  • More efficient routing for Route 70: The new hub will help the Route 70 run more smoothly as we prepare to launch the Peninsula RapidBus Line.
  • A large shelter for passengers: We want to make sure people can wait for their bus in comfort, no matter the weather.
  • Support Community Plans: The new Transit Hub will help expand transit services in Sidney and aligns with the Victoria Regional RapidBus Implementation Strategy (2021) , and the Peninsula Local Area Transit Plan (2022). This investment will support the region’s future transit network, accommodate increased service levels, and improve the customer experience.

When will the Transit Hub be built?

Right now, we're still in the design phase—which means we're collecting feedback and figuring out exactly how the hub will look and operate. Before we can start building, we need to complete the design and receive funding approvals from the Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC) and the Province of BC. This means that construction is not expected to start until 2027 or later.

What’s happened so far?

In 2021 the Victoria Regional Transit Commission (VRTC) approved the RapidBus Implementation Strategy, which looked to accelerate ridership growth along key corridors and identified key infrastructure investments to support this. One of the projects identified in the RapidBus Implementation Strategy was a new RapidBus station in Sidney. Need for this project was further supported by the Peninsula Local Area Transit Plan (2022), which identified the intersection of Seventh Street and Bevan Avenue as a key transfer location between the planned Peninsula RapidBus Line and local transit routes services.

BC Transit and the Town of Sidney then conducted a feasibility study for building the Transit Hub at the intersection of Seventh Street and Bevan Avenue and the concept was then supported by Sidney Council in June 2024 and the VRTC in November 2024, which initiated the design phase that we are in now.
