Transit Improvements

Local Smithers Transit Service

Currently, local, in-town transit service in Smithers is provided via on-request service. During certain periods of the day, people can call and request a bus to pick them up and take them to their destination (curb-to-curb).

We’re looking at possible improvements to local transit service in Smithers and would like your help identifying which, if any, to pursue. Please indicate if you would support the proposed change, yes or no.

Extending span later to approximately 9:00 p.m. on weekdays

There is no local transit service available after 4:15 p.m. on weekdays.

Adding midday service

Currently, on-request service is unavailable between 11:45 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on weekdays and between 11:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. on Saturdays

Introducing Sunday service

Currently there is no transit service available on Sundays. This proposal would introduce transit service on Sundays at a similar level as the existing Saturday service.

Currently, there is no transit service available on any statutory holidays. This proposal would introduce service on statutory holidays at a similar level as the existing Saturday service.

On-Request vs. Conventional

There is an opportunity to change the local, in-town service to a more conventional, fixed-route and schedule transit service. Each type of service has benefits and trade-offs; we’re asking for feedback to determine which type of service would work best for Smithers. Both types of service would have similar resource requirements and total costs.

On-Request

Benefits: 

  • Flexible.
  • Shorter walking distance to transit Demand responsive.

Trade-off:

  • Must call ahead.
  • Wait times.
  • Less efficient.


Conventional, Fixed Route and Schedule

Benefits:

  • Predictable 
  • Reliable. 
  • Efficient. 

Trade-off: 

  • Fixed schedule. 
  • Fixed route. 
  • Further walking distance for those who live off-route.

22 Smithers/Telkwa

Route 22 provides transit service between Smithers and Telkwa on a fixed schedule, with flexible routing; allowing the bus to go up to 500 meters from the route to pick up or drop off passengers.

We’re looking at possible improvements to route 22 and would like your help identifying which, if any, to pursue. Please indicate if you would support the proposed change, yes or no.

Currently, there is only one round trip to the Tower Road area in Telkwa.

Currently, the last trip on route 22 leaves at 6:45 p.m. on weekdays.
